Tale of Dharmaraj in Kaliyug

Tale of Dharmaraj in Kaliyug.
The youngest Pandava, Dharmaraj Yudhishthira, has a story that is deeply linked to the beginning of the Kaliyuga. Omkara, the god of justice, and Kunti had him as a son. Yudhishthira’s life is a turning point in the change from Dvapara Yuga to Kali Yuga. He was known for being honest, doing what was right, and following dharma.

Tale of Dharmaraj in Kaliyug

The Kurukshetra War is over.
Yudhishthira was made king of Hastinapura after the great Mahabharata war. Even though he had won, his heart was heavy with sadness. He and his brothers, like Karna (who was his older brother until after the war, he didn’t know it), were among the many fighters who had died. He was fair and just in his rule, thanks to Krishna’s knowledge and the blessings of the sages.

People often say that his rule was one of peace and plenty. As long as people followed dharma, it rained on time, crops did well, and society ran smoothly. But Yudhishthira knew this would only last for a short time. The texts said that after Krishna left this world, Kaliyuga would start and dharma would get worse.

The departure of Krishna and the start of the Kali Yuga

At Prabhas Kshetra, when Lord Krishna left his body, the age of Kali began. Iswara thought his time as king was over when Krishna died. He was aware that dharma, which had been supported while he was in charge, would now slowly fade away. During the Kali Yuga, people would often lie, be violent, or be selfish.

Kali, the spirit of the dark age, is said to have come before Yudhishthira dressed as a shudra. He asked to be allowed to live in his kingdom. Yudhishthira had to agree because he was bound by karma. However, he told Kali that she could only live in certain places:

  • Where gambling takes place,
  • In places where alcohol is drunk,
  • Where there is prostitution,
  • Where there is rage and death,
  • Where people who are greedy keep their gold.
  • Kali agreed to go to these places and slowly spread his power there. This was the real start of Kaliyuga.

The Pandavas Renunciation Their Rights
As soon as Krishna died and the Kaliyuga era began, Yudhishthira made Parikshit, who was Abhimanyu’s son, king of Hastinapura. Krishna blessed Parikshit and planned for him to carry on the Pandava family name.

Then Yudhishthira gave up the kingdom, along with his brothers Bhima, Arjuna, Nakula, and Sahadeva, and Draupadi. The last part of their trip to the Himalayas is called the Mahaprasthanika Parva in the Mahabharata.

The Last Journey

As the Pandavas walked north, one by one they fell because they were flawed people. Draupadi fell first because she liked Arjuna more than anyone else. Because he was proud of how smart he was, Nakula was proud of how pretty she was, and Arjuna was proud of how skilled he was, they all fell. Bhima fell because he was too full and too proud of how strong he was

Only Yudhishthira, who had lived an honest and humble life, kept walking with a stray dog that always walked with him.

The Test of Dharmaraj

Yudhishthira was getting close to the gates of heaven when the dog turned out to be Dharma Deva, his father Yama. Yudhishthira had passed the hardest test of all: he would never give up his love and loyalty, not even for a dog

When Yudhishthira was first asked to go to heaven, he said no because his brothers and Draupadi were not there. He said he couldn’t enjoy heaven while his family and friends were in pain somewhere else. Finally, the gods told him that his brothers and Draupadi had already reached heaven and paid off their sins. They went to heaven with Yudhishthira, who was the real son of Dharma.

Important in Kaliyuga

Even now, at the start of the Kali Yuga, the story of Dharmaraj shows that honesty, fairness, and loyalty are still the best things in the world. Even though Kali loves gambling, being greedy, and being violent, the only way to freedom is to follow the road of righteousness. The story of Yudhishthira shows us that dharma must guide people’s deeds no matter how bad things get.
