The purpose of National Science Day is to honor Indian physicist C V Raman 1928 discovery of the “Raman Effect,” which is the scattering of photons.
India observes National Science Day on February 28 each year to commemorate Indian scientist Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman’s 1928 discovery of the photon scattering phenomenon.

The finding was subsequently dubbed the “Raman Effect” in honor of him. For this amazing discovery, Mr. Raman received the 1930 Nobel Prize in science. In 1986, the Indian government was requested by the National Council for Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC) to declare February 28 to be National Science Day. The day was recognized by the government as National Science Day. February 28, 1987, was National Science Day’s inaugural celebration.
