The History of Women’s Day

In the United States, International Women’s Day (IWD) was first observed in 1909. The Socialist Party of America was the first to observe it in order to call for improved working conditions and women’s rights. When German feminist Clara Zetkin suggested an annual celebration of women’s rights in 1910, the concept gained international traction. By 1977, the United Nations officially recognized March 8th as International Women’s Day. Since then, it has been celebrated globally to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment.
