Jhandewalan Temple Histor
- The temple dates back to the 18th century, when a cloth dealer named Badri Das (or Badri Bhagat) found the idol.
- Legend has it that Badri Bhagat had a dream from God in which the Goddess (Maa) showed him where her idol was concealed.
- Badri Bhagat found the idol of Mata Jhandewali and a stone Shiva Lingam with nāga sculptures while digging.
- The original idol’s hands were broken during the excavation, therefore silver hands were fabricated and put on subsequently.
- The original idol is still in a cave basement named the “Maa Gufa Wali” (Mother Goddess of the Cave). A duplicate was put on the ground level and is called the “Maa Jhande Wali” (Mother Goddess of the Flag).
- The name Jhandewalan stems from the practice of devotees bringing enormous prayer flags called “jhandas.” This custom began with Badri Bhagat, who put up a flag there.
- The Badri Bhagat Jhandewalan Mandir Society, a non-profit trust, runs the temple.
- In the past, the region around the temple was tense: in 1924, there were riots because of a neighboring butcher, but the temple became more and more important over time.

Building and Architecture
- The temple’s architecture is similar to that of traditional Hindu temples, however it isn’t purely based on one style of building.
- There are two primary levels in the building:
- The lower level is a cave-like chamber called the “gufa” where people worship the original idol and a Shiva Lingam.
- The upper level has a copy of the idol of Maa Jhandewali, as well as idols of Saraswati, Kali, and other gods.
- There are additional smaller shrines inside the temple complex, such as a Shiva temple.
- There are businesses selling offerings like flowers, flags, and other puja items all around the temple courtyard and on the steps. This adds to the spiritual mood.
