PHUKET (THAILAND), April 2: On Tuesday at the IWF World Cup in Phuket, weightlifter Bindyrani Devi, a medallist at the Commonwealth Games, won the bronze medal in the women’s 55kg category.

The 25-year-old, who was competing in a weight class that was not Olympic, lifted 196 kg (83 kg + 113 kg) in total to take the final podium position.

The Manipuri lifter, who had won the CWG silver in Birmingham in 2022 with a total effort of 203kg, put up a lackluster performance, nevertheless.

The Indian finished with a total of 38 kg less than North Korea’s Kang Hyon Gyong, who took home the gold medal with her effort of 234 kg (103 kg + 131 kg). The Indian was only able to complete three legal lifts in her six attempts today.

With a personal record of 201kg (91 kg+110 kg), Romania’s Cambei Mihaela-Valentina—who qualified for the Olympics in Paris—won the silver in Mirabai Chanu’s 49kg weight class.

In the clean and jerk category, Bindyarani won the silver medal as well for her 113 kg lift. In continental, World Cup, and World championship competitions, medals are given out separately for snatch, clean and jerk, and total lift.

Bindiyarani won a medal in the last Olympic qualifying event, although she is not in the running for the Games in Paris.

She competed in the 2022 world championships in the 59kg weight class, which is used for the Olympics in Paris, and placed 25th. However, she returned to her previous weight class of 55 kg, where she placed second in the Asian Championship the previous year.

She is not even considered among the top 10 lifters in each weight class, currently rated 29th in the 59kg Olympic Qualification Ranking (OQR).

Will there be weightlifting at the Olympics in 2024?

Olympic quotas for national teams in Paris 2024 will go to the top 10 weightlifters in the Olympic weight classes based on OQR, which will determine which athlete per country is ranked highest in each weight class. Later this month, the Olympic weightlifting qualification cycle comes to a close.
