As the first foreign head of state to be bestowed with Bhutan’s Highest Civilian Award, the “Order of the Druk Gyalpo,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi accepted it on Friday.
In appreciation of “his outstanding contribution to the growth of India-Bhutan relations and for his distinguished service to the Bhutanese nation and people,” Prime Minister Modi has been given this award.
“Proud to have received the ‘Order of the Druk Gyalpo’ Award from Bhutan. Not long after, PM Modi posted on X, saying, “I dedicate it to 140 crore Indians.”
Prime Minister Modi received the ‘Order of the Druk Glyalpo’ from King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck of Bhutan.
Bhutan's Highest Civilian Award
The King of Bhutan announced the recipient of the honor on December 17, 2021, during the 114th National Day ceremonies. It was given to Prime Minister Modi on Friday during his two-day State visit—his third since assuming the position in 2014.
“As per ranking and precedence established, the Order of the Druk Gyalpo was instituted as the decoration for lifetime achievement and is the pinnacle of the honor system in Bhutan, taking precedence over all orders, decorations and medals,” read a statement issued by the Indian Embassy in 2021, the year the announcement was made.
