Grishneshwar Temple

One of India’ biggest and most ancient Vedic Shiva temples is the Grishneshwar Temple. Situated in the Maharashtra state of western India, Ahvaz town is home to one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, which are holy sites for Hindu visitors.

Shiva is the primary god of the temple, and it is well-known for its enormous Shiva linga, which stands more than 40 feet tall. An important component of the Shishganga hermitage, the temple was built under the patronage of Shivaji Maharaj.

Story Behind Grishneshwar Temple

  • It is included in the Shiva Purana as one of the twelve Jyotirlinga shrines.
  • For those who are followers of Lord Shiva, the temple is very important both spiritually and religiously.

Hindu mythology connects the narrative of Kusuma, a pious woman, with Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga.

After her husband falsely accused Kusuma of being unfaithful, she prayed to Lord Shiva at this location to establish her innocence.
The location became hallowed when Lord Shiva showed up and cleared her name.

Architecture:

The temple, like many other Maharashtrian temples, is constructed in the Hemadpanthi architectural style.

The garbhagriha (sanctum sanctorum), sabha mandap (assembly hall), and shikhara (spire) are all part of the temple complex.

Lord Grishneshwa’s lingam, an iconic depiction of Shiva, is kept in the sanctum sanctorum.

What miracles does the Grishneshwar Temple perform?

  • Then a tremendous light arose in the vermillion, which miraculously transformed into a ShivaLinga. Parvati was in complete amazement at this. Then came the statement from Lord Shankara, “This Linga was hidden in the Patala.” And used his trident to remove it. Then a bubble filled with water (Kashikhand) burst from the earth.
  • Although the stairs are not steep, you must descend about 500 steps to reach the temple. They do not allow Abhishek over 2 PM and have a dedicated Dakshina card for that time.
