Pradyumn was the first child of Lord Krishna and Goddess Rukmini. He is thought to be Kamadeva, the god of desire and love, reborn. The Bhagavata Purana, the Harivamsa, and other Vaishnava texts are some of the old Hindu writings that support this view. Pradyumn’s life is very linked to the story of Kamadeva, how he was cursed, reborn, and given a holy purpose.

Kamadeva and the Curse
Kamadeva is the god of desire, love, and attraction. He plays an important part in keeping the world in balance by making sure that there is love and connection and that life goes on. The gods were once in need of help from Lord Shiva, who needed to stop what he was doing to beat the demon Tarakasura. Kamadeva was told to use his love arrows to wake Shiva up.
Kamadeva shot an arrow at Lord Shiva. Shiva was angry and opened his third eye. He burned Kamadeva to dust. Kamadeva’s body was broken up, but his spirit lived on. His wife, Rati, was very sad about this event. She honestly prayed for her husband to come back.
Rati’s love moved Lord Shiva, who then blessed Kamadeva and told him he would be reborn without a form that could be seen. He would then be born as the son of Lord Krishna. Kamadeva’s path was shaped by this curse and blessing.
Pradyumna birth as Krishna’s child
Kamadeva was born again in the city of Dwarka as Pradyumn, the child of Krishna and Rukmini. Pradyumn was beautiful, charming, brave, and smart from the moment he was born. But right after he was born, the demon Shambara kidnapped him because he was afraid of a promise that Pradyumn would kill him.
Shambara threw the baby into the ocean, but Pradyumn was saved and raised by Mayavati, who was really Rati born again. When Pradyumn got older, Mayavati told him who he really was and taught him about gods and weapons.
Shambara the devil heard a prophecy telling him that he would one day be killed by the child of Lord Krishna and Rukmini after Pradyumna’s birth. Shambara took Pradyumna away from his home and threw the baby into the ocean within ten days of his birth because he was afraid. The child was eaten by a big fish. Later, that fish was caught and taken to Shambara’s cook. The fish was cut open, and a live baby was found inside. The baby was then given to Mayavati. The Bhagavata Purana says that Rati was born as Mayavati on Earth. She taught Pradyumna about Maha-maya while he was growing up. After growing up, Pradyumna killed Shambara and went back to Dwarka.

End of the Curse and Defeat of Shambara
Pradyumn finally faced Shambara and killed him in fight, which was his fate. After beating the monster, Pradyumn went back to Dwarka, and Lord Krishna there saw him as his son. This meeting marked the end of Kamadeva’s curse. Through Pradyumn, he got his form and divine purpose back. Later, Pradyumn married Rukmavati (Devi Rati) and stayed on as a brave Yadava prince.
