Mercy: Can AI Truly Judge a Human Life?

A simple look at the futuristic thriller starring Chris Pratt and Rebecca Ferguson

Imagine waking up in a room, strapped to a chair, and being told you have exactly 90 minutes to prove you didn’t kill your wife. To make things even more intense, your judge isn’t a human—it’s a high-tech Artificial Intelligence. This is the heart-pounding setup of the movie Mercy.

Directed by Timur Bekmambetov, the film takes us to a near-future Los Angeles. Chris Pratt plays Detective Chris Raven, a man who actually supported this “Mercy” AI court system… until he became its target. Now, he has to use the very technology he championed to dig through digital footprints, emails, and home security footage to find the real killer before his time runs out.

Why it feels so real: The movie uses a “Screenlife” style, meaning a lot of what we see is through computer screens and cameras. It feels like we are right there with the detective, scrolling through clues and racing against the clock.

What makes Mercy stand out isn’t just the action. It’s the human story. We see a father struggling with grief, a partner trying to trust his gut, and the scary realization that data doesn’t always show the “grey areas” of human life. Rebecca Ferguson plays Judge Maddox, the AI, providing a chillingly calm voice that reminds us how cold logic can be when compared to human emotion.

If you enjoy thrillers that make you think about where our world is headed with technology, this is definitely one for your watchlist. It’s simple, fast-paced, and asks a very big question: Would you trust a machine with your life?
