He went to many places and taught people about kindness, care, and devotion. He moved to Akkalkot around 1856; it is now a town in the Solapur district of Maharashtra. He lived there for 22 years, until he died (samadhi) in 1878. Many of his followers still feel drawn to him because they think that his spiritual legacy lives on even though he is not physically present.

Where devotion meets the holy banyan tree is the temple.

It is sometimes called the Vatavruksha Swami Samarth Mandir, where “Vatavruksha” means “banyan tree.” What’s the reason? There is a holy banyan tree on the property where Swami Samarth used to spend a lot of time, teach, and meditate. His Mahasamadhi, or final resting place, or tomb-shrine, is also there.

  • The temple isn’t very fancy or heavily decorated like some huge old temples. Its beauty comes from how simple it is and how holy it feels.
  • There is a major shrine with Swami Samarth’s samadhi (tomb), where followers go to meditate and see the samadhi. There is also a statue of Swami Samarth that is the size of a person.
  • In the building, there is an assembly hall called Sabha Mandap where people can meet, pray, sing bhajans, and other things.
  • There is also a Dharamshala (guest house), a library, a museum, free food service (Anna Chhatra or Annadan Mandal), meditation hall, and other useful facilities for pilgrims in the area. These are there to help followers who come from far away.

The legend and teachings of Swami Samarth’s life story

  • Where Swami Samarth came from is a mystery. He is said to have come from near Kardali forest in Andhra Pradesh. His real name may have been Nrusimha Bhan. However, many stories say that he said he came from a banyan tree (vatavriksha).
  • Many of his fans believe that he is the reincarnation of both Lord Dattatreya and Narasimha Saraswati. In the Dattatreya religion, saints are called avatars, which means they are very close to God and come to help people.
  • Being kind, helping others, having faith, letting go of your ego, and understanding spiritual truths were important parts of what he taught. His followers say that he has done many miracles, such as healings, answering prayers, giving advice, and so on.
  • In 1878, under that holy banyan tree in Akkalkot, he reached Mahasamadhi, which means “physical departure.”

How to Get There and What to Expect

  • The temple is usually open from early morning (around 5 AM) to late evening (around 10 PM), but there may be breaks in the middle of the day.
There are guest houses and Dharamshala services inside or near the temple for pilgrims and visitors to stay. There is free food service (Anna Chhatra).
  • As a sign of respect, wear simple clothes. Avoid wearing clothes that are too relaxed or revealing; it’s best to cover your arms and legs.
