Ayyappa Swami Birth History
No other god in Hindu mythology had a birth like Lord Ayyappa’s. Legend has it that he was born when Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu’s Mohini avatar united.
Why Was Ayyappa Born?
In order to distribute amrita (nectar) to the gods during the churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan), Lord Vishnu assumed the shape of Mohini. Lord Shiva was mesmerized by this beautiful figure, and a celestial child was born as a result of their marriage. This infant, who was destined to destroy the demon Mahishi, a formidable entity seeking retribution for the murder of her brother Mahishasura, was none other than Ayyappa.
Adoption by the Pandalam King
Ayyappa was abandoned on the banks of the Pampa River after his birth, and Rajasekhara, the childless Pandalam monarch, found him there. Since he was discovered with a golden bell (mani) around his neck, the monarch adopted him and gave him the name Manikandan. Ayyappa fulfilled his destiny as a defender of dharma by growing up with great wisdom, power, and divine attributes.
