India commemorates Kargil Vijay Diwas, a day on July 26th every year, in memory of the valiant warriors who fought and gave their lives during the 1999 Kargil War. On this day in history, India defeated Pakistani forces that had penetrated into its territory in the Jammu and Kashmir area of Kargil.

Why Did the Kargil War Start?

Pakistani militants and soldiers breached the Line of Control (LoC) and took control of crucial heights in the Kargil region during the summer of 1999. Their objectives were to gain a geopolitical edge and shut off the Siachen Glacier’s essential supply routes. India’s security and sovereignty were seriously threatened by this incursion, which is why the country’s military forces initiated “Operation Vijay” to retake these areas.
