The Heroic Vulture: Sampati

Sampati : How Jatayu’s Brother Saved the Mission to Find Mother Sita

Who is Sampati?

In the great epic Ramayana, we often talk about the bravery of Jatayu, but his elder brother Sampati is a hero whose story is equally touching[cite: 1]. Both were divine vultures and sons of Aruna, the charioteer of the Sun God[cite: 1].

A Brother’s Sacrifice: Long ago, the two brothers flew towards the sun to see who could go higher. When the heat became too intense for the younger Jatayu, Sampati spread his massive wings to protect him. His own wings were burnt away, and he fell to the earth on the Vindhya Mountains, unable to fly for many years[cite: 1].

How Sampati Helped Lord Rama

After many years of living without wings, Sampati met the Vanara (monkey) army led by Hanuman and Angada. They were searching for Mother Sita and felt hopeless near the southern ocean[cite: 1].

Sampati used his incredible long-distance vision to look across the ocean. He confirmed to Hanuman that Mother Sita was indeed held captive in the Ashoka Vatika in Lanka, exactly 100 yojanas away[cite: 1]. This information gave the army the direction and hope they needed to continue the mission.

Life After the Ramayana

The story of Sampati has a beautiful ending. According to a prophecy, once he helped the messengers of Lord Rama, his wings would grow back. As soon as he finished speaking with Hanuman, his feathers miraculously sprouted again[cite: 1]. Restored and strong, he performed the last rites for his brother Jatayu and flew back into the sky[cite: 1].
