The 58th Jnanpith Award will be given to renowned Urdu poet Gulzar and Sanskrit scholar Jagadguru Rambhadracharya, the Jnanpith selection committee announced on Saturday (Feb 17).

Gulzar, real name Sampooran Singh Kalra, is a well-known Hindi film director and poet who is regarded as one of the best Urdu poets of his day.

Founder and head of Tulsi Peeth in Chitrakoot, Rambhadracharya is a well-known Hindu spiritual teacher, author of over 240 books and scriptures, including four epics.

“It has been decided to give the award (for 2023) to eminent writers from two languages: Sanskrit litterateur Jagadguru Rambhadracharya and well-known Urdu litterateur Shri Gulzar,” the Jnanpith selection committee said in a statement.

In addition to at least five National Film Awards, Gulzar was honored with the Sahitya Akademi Award for Urdu in 2002, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2013, the Padma Bhushan in 2004, and the Padmavati Award in 2013.

Among his best compositions are “Jai Ho” from the critically acclaimed movie “Slumdog Millionaire,” which won an Oscar in 2009 and a Grammy in 2010. He also wrote songs for other highly regarded movies, including “Maachhis” (1996), “Omkara” (2006), “Dil Se…” (1998), and “Guru” (2007).

Along with these timeless, critically acclaimed films, Gulzar also directed the television series “Mirza Ghalib” (1988), “Koshish” (1972), “Parichay” (1972), “Mausam” (1975), and “Ijaazat” (1977).

Poet and writer in numerous Indian languages, including Sanskrit, Hindi, Awadhi, and Maithili, Rambhadracharya is a polyglot who speaks 22 languages. He was awarded the Padma Vibhushan in 2015. 

The Jnanpith Award was instituted in 1944 and is presented yearly to recognize exceptional contributions to Indian literature. The Sanskrit language is receiving this prize for the second time, and the Urdu language is receiving it for the fifth time.
