The sport’s governing body, World Archery, claims that 16-year-old SHEETAL DEVI of Loidhar hamlet in Kishtwar, Jammu and Kashmir, is the “first female archer without arms to compete internationally.” She took home three medals from the Asian Para Games in Hangzhou this week.

The adolescent is from the Loidhar village in the Kishtwar area of Jammu & Kashmir. Her affinity for athletics dates back to her early years.

She was identified as having phocomelia, a rare prenatal condition characterized by undeveloped limbs.
Over time, though, Sheetal began to move closer to her goals and enrolled in the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board Sports Complex in Katra. She received coaching from Kuldeep Vedwa and Abhilasha Chaudhary. The trainers converted Sheetal’s standard arch releaser into a shoulder releaser.

Devi’s daily target count increased from 50 to 100 arrows to 300 until she achieved her first goal at the Asian Para Games.
