The Request to Visit Hastinapur

People learned a lot about the Pandavas and respected them after they built the beautiful city of Indraprastha. The Kauravas were very angry about this, especially Duryodhana. Shakuni, Duryodhana’s smart uncle, came up with a way to defeat the Pandavas. He recommended that they have a gambling match with Yudhishthira, who was the oldest Pandava.

Shakuni knew how to roll dice and could control what would happen. Duryodhana agreed to the plan because he knew that Yudhishthira liked to gamble. They were called to Hastinapur, and the game was set up in the royal court there.

The game of chance starts.

At first, Yudhishthira wasn’t sure, but in the end, he agreed out of respect. At the start of the game, Yudhishthira bet all of his wealth, house, and jewels. Shakuni tampered with the dice every time they were thrown, making sure Yudhishthira would lose.

His riches, kingdom, and soon even his brothers Bhima, Arjuna, Nakula, and Sahadeva were taken away one by one. He finally gave up and staked himself, but he lost. Even though the hall was tense, the Pandavas kept quiet because their brother made them promise to do so.

How Draupadi felt humiliated

As a last resort, Yudhishthira bet on Draupadi, their queen, but lost her too. Draupadi had to be brought into court by Duryodhana. Draupadi was ashamed and angry, so she asked the elders, “Did Yudhishthira have any right to stake me after he had already lost himself?”

Everyone in the hall could hear her, but no one spoke back. Because he was so proud, Duryodhana insulted her even more by telling her to sit on his thigh. Dushasana was told to drag her into court by him. Dushasana tried to take Draupadi’s clothes off in front of everyone, but by some miracle, her sari grew longer. This was because Lord Krishna’s spiritual power was protecting her.

The oath of getting even

They were angry, but they couldn’t do anything about it at the time. Bhima promised Duryodhana that he would kill him by breaking his thigh and that he would rip Dushasana’s chest apart because he was so mean. The war of Kurukshetra would be shaped by these vows.

What Came Next

Because they were so proud, the Kauravas laughed when the Pandavas lost. But the older people, like Vidura and Bhishma, spoke out against it, calling it unfair and shameful. Finally, Dhritarashtra stepped in because he didn’t want his family to be destroyed. He gave everything back to the Pandavas.

They were already at odds with each other, though. This was something that the Pandavas and Kauravas would never accept or forget. The Pandavas lost respect in this dice game, and it also set the stage for the great war of Kurukshetra.
