The Mystery of the Dancing Plague
Dancing Plague : Imagine a town where people could not stop dancing…
What was the Dancing Plague?
In the year 1518, a very strange thing happened in a place called Strasbourg. It all started with one woman named Frau Troffea. She walked out into the street and started to dance. She didn’t have any music, and she didn’t look happy. She just kept dancing for days!
Soon, more people joined her. Within a month, about 400 people were dancing in the streets. They couldn’t stop even if they wanted to. Their feet were bleeding, and they were very tired, but the “dance” continued.
What caused this mystery?
Even today, scientists are not 100% sure what happened. Here are the two most popular ideas explained in simple words:
- Bad Bread: Some think they ate bread made with a bad fungus (mold) that made them act crazy.
- Mass Stress: Life was very hard back then. People were hungry and sick. Some think their brains “snapped” from too much stress, causing everyone to act the same way.
It remains one of the weirdest events in human history. A whole town caught a “dancing fever” that no medicine could fix.
