Aihole, a treasure trove of ancient Indian architecture and a location where history really comes to life, is tucked away in the center of Karnataka, close to the more well-known Hampi and Pattadakal. Known as the “cradle of Indian temple architecture,” Aihole is home to more than 120 stone temples and other structures that all tell stories about the powerful Chalukya dynasty that ruled this area in the past. Between the sixth and the twelfth centuries CE, the Chalukyas were a powerful building and art patronage group. One of their first capitals, It was a thriving center for temple design experimentation. The wide range of architectural styles present here makes this clear. You will see how Dravidian and Nagara (North Indian) architectural elements have evolved from simpler, nearly cave-like structures to more intricate and ornate temples.
With its recorded history firmly rooted in the rise of the Early Chalukya dynasty in the sixth century, It has a legendary association with Parashurama and demonstrates prehistoric human settlement near the Meguti hillocks. It is also known as Ayyavole and Aryapura in Hindu texts from the fourth to the twelfth centuries CE, and later as Aivalli and Ahivolal in British archaeological reports.

- Another significant Chalukyan center, Pattadakal (about 13 km away) is a UNESCO World Heritage site that is home to a stunning collection of nine major Hindu temples as well as a Jain sanctuary. With elaborate carvings and imposing buildings like the Virupaksha and Mallikarjuna temples, it is a chance to see Chalukyan architects at the pinnacle of their art.

- Distance: Approximately 446 km. (6-7 hours)
- Duration: Around 8 hours and 18 minutes by car.
- Route: Primarily via NH 48 and NH50.
- Train : This can cost anywhere from ₹750 to ₹8,000 and take up to 10 to 11 hours.
- Flights: Although it would probably cost more and not necessarily be faster, you could fly to Hubli or Belgaum and then take a bus or taxi to Aihole.
- Bus: The price ranges from ₹1,200 to ₹5,500. (6-7 Hours)
