The Kopeshwar Temple Unique Heritage: A Journey Through Time

Introduction

KOPESHWAR TEMPLE

This is evidenced by inscriptions dating back to the 12th century. The façade of the temple is supported by 92 elephant carvings, and the inside is supported by 108 stone carved pillars. Aside from it, the temple is adorned with beautiful carvings of gods and goddesses.

The Kopeshwar Temple may be found at Khidrapur, Kolhapur district, Maharashtra. It is a Shiva-dedicated Hindu temple. This temple is located in Maharashtra. It can also be reached from Sangli. Shilahara ruler Gandaraditya erected it between 1109 and 1178 CE in the 12th century. It is located east of Kolhapur, on the bank of the Krishna River, and is both ancient and artistic. Despite being Jain kings, the Silaharas built and repaired numerous Hindu temples, demonstrating their respect and love for all religions. Kopeshwar translates to “angry Shiva.”

SVARGA MADAP: KOPESHWAR TEMPLE

We enter the Svarga Mandap through a circular aperture that is exposed to the sky. Looking at the sky mesmerizes and gives the impression of being in the heavens, therefore justifying the name Svarga Mandap. Beautifully sculpted idols of Lord Ganesh, Karthikeya Swami, Lord Kubera, and Lord Yamraj may be found around the Svarga Mandap. Lord Indra, for example, together with their carrying animals such as peacocks, mice, elephants, and so on. Standing in the center of the Svarga Mandap, we can observe Lord Brahma’s idols on the left-hand side wall of the entry to the Sabha Mandap.

The Shiva Kopeshwar shivling in the Garbh Gruha may be seen in the center, while the wonderfully sculpted statue of Vishnu can be found on the right-hand side wall. So we may see the Tridev ‘Brahma Mahesh Vishnu’ at a glance. A carved inscription in Sanskrit, inscribed in Devnagari script, is situated on a stone pedestal east of the temple’s southern entryway.

STRUCTURE OF SVARGA MADAP

The temple is organized into four sections. Swargamandapa, Sabhamandapa, Antaral kaksha, and Garbha gruha are a few examples. The Swargamandapa has an open-top vestibule. Elephant sculptures support the temple’s weight at the base. We first notice Vishnu (Dhopeshwar) and Shivaling looking north in the interior. Separate Actor-Pendal, also known as swarga mandap, hall, old pillars, carvings of gods, and male and female artists in diverse stances are all appealing. The semi-circular ceiling is adorned with exquisite engravings. The entire ‘Shivaleelamrit’ is etched on the outside. Shilahara built it in the 11th and 12th centuries.

Attractive features include a separate Actor-Pendal, a hall, antique pillars, carvings of gods, and male-female artists in various attitudes. This is India’s only Shiva temple featuring a Vishnu idol.
