Kohli had bid farewell to the longest version of the game of cricket on 12 May, leaving the entire cricketing fraternity stunned. Addressing the journalists on Saturday (as quoted by PTI), Ganguly mentioned,

“Retirement is a personal choice. It is his choice to retire.

  • On 7 May, Kohli contacted the BCCI once more, requesting that he be allowed to make the announcement of his retirement on social media.
  • The BCCI officials asked him to wait for a few days before making the announcement since Operation Sindoor and the war with Pakistan were still being pursued.
  • After the ceasefire, Kohli contacted the BCCI and the Indian selectors and told them that he was going to make the announcement of his retirement.

Though both Kohli and Rohit have decided to cling on in the ODI format, India batting great Sunil Gavaskar believes that India’s superstar pair will not survive until the next Cricket World Cup in late 2027.
