Exploring the Ancient Dhingu Mata Temple in Shimla
If you’re in Shimla and want to find a spot that feels truly peaceful, you have to visit the Dhingu Mata Temple. It sits high up on Dhingu Dhar hill, right above the Sanjauli area. It’s a favorite for locals because it offers incredible mountain views and a quiet atmosphere that you just can’t find in the busier parts of town.
The History Behind the Temple
The Dhingu Mata Temple has been a part of Shimla for over 100 years. Legend says a local ruler named Raja Dhingu had a dream where Goddess Durga asked him to build a temple for her. He did exactly that, and the temple still honors his name today.
Why People Visit
This temple is dedicated to Goddess Durga. Inside, you’ll find ancient “Pindis” and a newly updated idol from 2021. It’s a place where many people go to pray for their wishes to come true.
- Sunday Bhandara: Every Sunday, the temple hosts a community meal (Bhandara) where everyone is welcome.
- Navratri Celebrations: During the nine days of Navratri, the temple is full of energy, music, and special prayers.
- Other Deities: You can also find shrines for Lord Shiva, Hanuman, Rama, and Ganesha here.
How to Get There
Reaching the temple at 7,812 feet is a bit of a journey, but it’s worth it! You have two choices:
- By Road: You can take a small vehicle up the narrow road that leads to the parking area near the top.
- The Stairs: If you enjoy a good walk, there are 400 stairs leading up from the Sanjauli link road. It’s a great way to see the view unfold as you climb.
The local government is even planning to install an escalator soon to help make the climb easier for everyone.

Coming from Bangalore?
If you’re planning a trip from Bangalore, the distance is about 2,800 km. Most travelers find it easiest to fly into Chandigarh or Delhi and then take a scenic drive or bus ride up to the hills of Shimla.
Visitor Tips
The temple is open every day from 5:00 AM to 8:00 PM. I recommend going early in the morning to catch the sunrise or late in the afternoon for a peaceful sunset over the mountains.
