The mission’s major goal was to attain universal sanitation coverage and offer a toilet to every rural family. The project began as a memorial to Mahatma Gandhi. It aims to promote rural sanitation by conducting Solid and Liquid Waste Management operations and creating Gram Panchayats Open Defecation Free (ODF).

About "Swachhata Hi Seva"
Swachhata Hi Seva (SHS) campaign is being celebrated from 15th September to 2nd October this year under the joint aegis of DDWS & MoHUA for undertaking shramdaan activities aiming to generate Jan Andolan through community participation; to provide impetus on implementation of SBM; to disseminate the importance of a sampoorna swachh village; to reinforce the concept of Sanitation as everyone’s business; and as a prelude for the Swachh Bharat Diwas (2nd October) with nationwide participation.

Prime Minister takes the lead | Swachhata Hi Seva
On Sunday, more than 9.20 lakh places around the country staged a huge cleanliness push in which individuals from all walks of life, including politicians, celebrities, and students, took part. Prime Minister Narendra Modi joined fitness influencer Ankit Baiyanpuria in this cleanliness initiative.
“Today, as the country focuses on Swachhata (cleanliness), Ankit Baiyanpuriya and I followed suit!” We included fitness and well-being in addition to cleanliness. “It’s all about that Swachh and Swasth Bharat (clean and healthy India) vibe,” Mr Modi wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
The message was accompanied by a video of Mr. Modi and Mr. Baiyanpuriya sweeping and picking up debris with brooms.
